THE OMICRON VARIANT IN THE UK

The world is still mainly in the dark about the new mutation of the widespread Corona Virus known as the Omicron Variant. Reports from the World Health Organisation confirmed that the Omicron variant’s spread is rising. The unvaccinated are still at a considerable risk of contracting the virus and we’re not sure about the level of protection enjoyed by the vaccinated.

Considering that the Delta variant is still widespread and wreaking havoc on the economic situations of many countries, one has to be careful and maintain all health measures to stay afloat.

What we know so far about the Omicron Variant in the UK

The World Health Organisation received the report of the Omicron Variant on 24th November 2021, stating the presence of the new mutation in South Africa. Research has since continued to verify symptoms of the variant.

The UK has recorded cases of the Omicron variant. The variant is still new, and it is still proving difficult to detect early signs.

Measures are currently in place to combat it, and placing a ban on certain countries from entering the UK border is taking center stage. The list of banned countries known as the Red List is to prevent the rise of the virus while we wait for the efforts to contain the virus internally to yield significant results. It is still not a fool-proof strategy to place countries on the Red List, but the plan is to monitor the effectiveness of the measures taken to streamline what’s responsible for the rise of the variant in the UK.

In reference to the official Twitter handle of the UK Health Security Agency, as of 7th December 2021, a total of 437 confirmed cases of the Omicron Variant have been recorded in the UK.
